Zimbabwe
is a safari paradise:
Down river from Victoria Falls, one of the Zambezi's deepest gorges was dammed to create Lake Kariba stretching 175 miles from end to end. Kariba dam is Zimbabwe's major source of electrical power. Several wildlife areas boarder the lake and the the Zambezi downstream from the dam, including Matusadona National Park and Mana Pools National Park. Kariba's islands and harbours create a paradise for yachtsman and fishermen and is home to 22 types of bream, carp, black bass, and the tigerfish, a razor-toothed fighting fish that weighs up to 30 lb. The Kariba Ferry travels from one end of the lake to the other. The voyage lasts 22 hours. SAFARI ITINERARIES Baobab

National Park
Hwange, in the northwest Zimbabwe, is a two hour drive from Victoria Falls. Covering 5000 sq miles, it is Zimbabwe's largest park with over 100 species of animals and over 400 species of birds including hippo, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, wildebees, kudu. and sable antelope, lion, leopard, and cheetah. This is one of the most famous parks in Africa Hwange is especially known for its elephants. During the rains, which fall from November through to February, the herds migrate across the border into Botswana's Chobe, Linyanti and Moremi areas. But in the dry season more than 20,000 are drawn to Hwange's sixty-odd natural pans and pump-supplied waterholes. The
three public campsites provide affordable accommodation. Main Camp is the
principal entry and park headquarters. It has a shop, petrol station, restaurant
and a variety of fully equipped cottages.

Falls or 'mosi oa tunya' (smoke that thunders). Here
the Zambezi River thunders over the mile wide rim into the Zambezi gorge
300 ft. below, creating a cloud of spray that can be seen from 50 miles
away. The Falls are an easy walk from town, viewed from Victoria Falls
National Park which is a lush rain forest created by the spray from the
falls. Activities include white water rafting, bungi jumping off the Zambezi
bridge, and flights over the falls in every human invention that can remain
airborne. The gorges and rapids downstream of Victoria Falls provide one
of the world's most exciting white water rafting venues. Because the rapids
are deep and rock-free it is also one of the world's safest and the professional
tour operators have a superb safety record.
Ilala Lodge is our recommendation for quality and value in a Victoria Falls Hotel. We believe that the best value for Victoria Falls is the River Club on the Zambian side of the falls. The $240 per person per night includes superb meals and a wide range of activities. Its serene location on the Zambezi River and luxury accommodations will assure a relaxing time away from the crowds. This is a constant favorite of our clients.

Pools National Park lies down river from Kariba Dam, along
the stretch of the Zambezi that rates as the wildest part of Zimbabwe.
The river, islands, flood plains, and hills of the escarpment that flank
the river are sanctuary for a profusion of wildlife and sustains elephant,
buffalo, zebra, antelope, and various predators. Hippo wallow in the muddy
waters and crocodile guard the river islands. Public campsites are available
in this park. Mana pools is formed in flood planes of the lower Zambezi,
and because of difficult accessibility during the rains is closed from
November through April.
This is an excellent location for canoeing safaris as well. Ruckomechi and Chikwenya Lodges at Mana Pools are among Zimbabwe's finest safari lodges. |
