Phinda Rhino Darting Safaris

 Provides guests an opportuinity to participate efforts to manage the Phinda white rhino population.  To date of approximately 55 white rhino, 5 have been darted for ear-notching and microchip-implant purposes.  Marking of animals in this way is crucial to effective wildlife management.

3 day darting safaris are offered Monthly from March 2002 – August 2002:
March 10th – 13th
April 7th – 10th
May 12th – 15th
June 16th – 19th
July 14th – 17th
August 18th – 21st
 

Program:
(1) Day one - arrive at Phinda, orientation, game drive, dinner, overnight.

(2) Day two Morning game drive, breakfast, lectures on dartings, role in conservation management and rhinotracking.  Lunch. Practical rhino tracking in the afternoon, followed by dinner.  Overnight.

(3) Day three – Darting Early morning departure in two vehicles carrying 6 guests each.  Target shooting to set sights.  Allocation of responsibilities for measuring heart rate, watering the animal, etc. Darting of rhino from vehicle.  Team leader to make exception, for darting team only, to be on foot if terrain should demand that. Day three has a flexible itinerary, which would probably include a breakfast in the bush.

Accommodation at Phinda Mountain Lodge only.

Cost:
U$220.00 Per Guest for 3-day activity in addition to the cost of accommodation at Phinda Mountain Lodge for 3 nights

Conditions:
Children 6x Years or Older are permitted on Game Drives, thus they are allowed to participate in the Rhino Darting. Children will be charged the full participant rate. Vehicles with children will however remain further away than those with only Adults. Once the Rhino’s are darted the children will be allowed near the Rhino.
